I do a lot of different handwork, including very occasional polymer clay, but I bought this book because my then 5 yo daughter loved it. Everytime we went to the store that carried it, I browsed patterns and fabric, she lusted over this book. Finally, I just had to give in to her before someone else bought “her” book.
We haven’t been disappointed. The illustrations are very clear, and very much to scale. I love having clothing patterns for the dolls available- they’re worthwhile even if you never make one of the dolls. The clear directions make it almost easy to make a face that actually looks like a face. The supplies lists are very straightforward and doesn’t include anything you can’t easily pick up at your local craft supply stores.
I highly recommend this book, even for children. A 6 yo is a little young to be able to carry out the project on her own, but working together with an adult is very possible.

Get Married From a Hawaii
I found the pictures and descriptions very helpful. Good ideas and easy to follow, even if this is new to you.

I was very frustrated when I was looking to but miniature dolls because they are so expensive. I’m a do it yourself kind of person and this book really helped me through the entire process to make my own dolls. The book starts with a description of all kinds of polymer clay and the author makes her recommendations of clays suitable for miniatures. The book has patterns to make women, men, girls, boys and babies. There are different variations for the different periods (for example the position of the breast to fit better the different styles of dresses, the shoes, etc.) It also has variations to make the dolls look older. The diferents periods represented in this book are: Tudor, Regency, Victorian, and Edwardian. It comes complete with patterns, fabric guidance and full instructions on how to dress the dolls and how to make the wigs. A lot of photos of beautiful dolls in a doll house setting. Do not get discoreage if at the beginning you don’t get good results, the author herself advises to practice until your skills improve. It really doesn’t take much. Buy this book, you won’t be sorry.
Very clear directions and instructions with lots of pictures. This should be the first book that anyone buys, if they’re wanting to make dollhouse dolls… simple enough for a beginner. Historical details.
I received this book just as it was described. I am very happy with it. I can’t wait to get started![[ASIN:1560105542 Modeling with Polymer Clay.
How to make clay characters by Maureen Carlson is not available to buy in Australia. I had it on loan from my local library but only for limited periods and it was never long enough. I am happy to say that although it may have been printed initially a long time ago I am delighted to have obtained it as it has such excellent instructions and lots of handy hints for the polymer clay first timer onwards. To anyone reading this revue who wants another hobby to try (even in Australia) buy this book and you will be hooked.
The mere fact that it is still in print is a sign of how good it is for any age. Easy to follow and great fun all you need is polymer clay your imagination and this book.
Maureen is such an amazing artist. If you are wanting to make figures in clay, then her books are a great place to start. I have several of her books now, and I love them all. Each one teaches you something more. Also this book came in great condition for a used book. Really good seller.
Indeed a marvellous book you should have as one of your clay-book collections. Maureen has good eyes and different angles when seeing new things, and new thoughts to convert them into brilliant figurines. I love her ideas of how making the snakes and the dragons, and her tricks to get new color mixtures are awesome.
I almost bought her books entirely, and have no regrets so far. Thanks to Amazon for superb service, even though I must bear waiting for a month and so for my orders.
My advice, you always can give your book collections to your kids when you no longer need them.
My daughter loves polymer clay and my wife saw this book so she told my daughter about it. My daughter got so excited she couldn’t wait to order it. When we got the book, it was in excellent shape. Maureen Carlson is a awesome sculptor and my daughter said she does not know how Maureen created those realistic faces even though there are steps for it!
I have four of Maureen Carlson’s books. They are all fantastic.
This one is my favorite. Very clear instruction. Gets you started and wanting to sculpt all the time. I love it!
